law resources

More good legal resources are coming to the web.  Some of the sites below contain technical information and others are geared for the nonlawyer, but all are worth looking at if you are trying to educate yourself.  It is always a good idea to educate yourself about subject matter even if you intend to use a lawyer; it helps you ask better questions, understand the process more, keep your fee down and have a better relationship with your attorney.

General Legal Resources

Cornell Legal Research Database - find Court of Appeals decisions (New York's highest court) since 1990, by keyword

FindLaw.com - an excellent research site, with links to state laws and other information for lawyers; also has a "for the public" section with an excellent list of helpful links, laws, etc.

Hieros Gamos - "law and government portal" - excellent site

Internet Legal Resource Guide - This is a fairly exhaustive site for those interested in legal research sources.  Contains a very good compilation of law sites out on the web, and breaks them down into research sites, directories, etc.   Also contains links to actual laws in each state.

Versuslaw.com - a relatively inexpensive legal research site which is of most use to lawyers but also contains some information for nonlawyers.

Westlaw.com - the research site of West Publishing, the industry giant in legal publishing - legal research tools but mainly geared for subscribers only.
